    White willow - Salix alba

As the first plant, I decided to talk Willow sull'acido acetylsalicylic of recent post.
Part used: bark stripped from the branches smooth and younger (rich active ingredient) in spring (April-May), at least 2-5 years. In willow shrub, the branches can be used longer, thicker and darker, dried and used in their entirety.Active Ingredients: phenolic glycosides (salicin and derivatives), flavonoids (virtually ubiquitous in plants), tannins and polysaccharide (glucomannan).Uses: analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic (due to the effect of phenolic glycosides), antirheumatic, astringent (due to tannins). Is very specific for rheumatic and arthritic inflammation and pain that results. It 's also used for gout, spondylitis, joint disease, cystitis, urethritis. It 'important to note that the Willow alone is not enough to combat these diseases and, as often in herbal medicine, are necessary synergies with other plants so that its effect is enhanced. For example, is an excellent febrifuge in association with Mentha x piperita which has properties diaphoretic (increases perspiration).Posology: thanks to the presence in large amounts of phenolic compounds (very soluble in water) in the cortex, the method of extraction of the active ingredients most effective is a decoction 1:20. The maximum daily quantity of salicin is 120-240mg.Toxicity: High doses can give you stomach pain, dizziness, headache, fatigue, skin rashes, allergies. No damage to the fetus, although it is not recommended during pregnancy.Contraindications: the willow are not present the same drawbacks of acetylsalicylic acid nell'Aspirina. Contraindications such as Reye's Syndrome, in fact, have never been reported following the use of the plant as a whole [see previous post http://la-medicina-alternativa.blogspot.it/2012/04/acido-acetilsalicilico-vetrina . html]Conclusion: This is a very powerful natural remedy and you take it without other drugs (especially analgesics and anti-platelet) because it could give harmful interactions. Briefly we can say that it is a remedy recommended for adults (because there are other good remedies for children), taken with some care, but that does not create big problems.
Unfortunately many studies on the properties of salicin and the salicylates have monopolized the search, losing interest in the study of the cortex in its entirety.
However, the history of medicine has shown repeatedly that the ancients were in possession of superior knowledge to what you might believe, so that the uses they made of herbs were then demonstrated by modern scientific research.
Follow me to know yet how the willow and other plants were used in ancient times.
