Hello everyone.Today,
in light of the actions of the previous days, I would like to compare
these two molecules so that we can determine to what extent the natural
cures may replace drugs.Salicin,
the active substance extracted from the bark of white willow (Salix
alba) and the flowers of Meadowsweet (Spiraea ulmaria) and isolated for
the first time in 1828, is acidic when dissolved in water, adjusting the
pH to a value of 2, 4. Therefore is defined salicylic acid.Salicylic
acid is a carboxylic acid [or organic acid, ie an organic compound that
contains a hydroxyl group OH linked to a carboxyl group CO] which
reacts with the alcohols very [organic compounds that have the empirical
formula CnH (2n + 1)O ,
for example methanol and ethanol] to produce esters and is toxic if
ingested in large quantities but, as every medicament, in the
appropriate dose has antiseptic properties (in foods and in
toothpastes), also finding use in products for the treatment of acne,
keratosis , warts, psoriasis and flaking. And
'present in plants such as white willow, raspberries (5mg/100g), red
currants and black (5mg/100g), Apricot (3mg/100g), Orange (2.4 mg/100g),
Pineapple (2mg/100g) and Chicory (1mg/100g).
In 1860 he was put on the market a molecule synthesized [obtained after a series of chemical reactions] that cost 10 times less acid extract of salicin. On the threshold of 1900 appeared another molecule.Acetylsalicylic acid, in fact, is derived by esterification of the phenolic OH group of salicylic acid with an acetyl group (using acetic anhydride). Was thus obtained a compound which presented therapeutic effects equal to those of salicylic acid, but the side effects were minor.Aspirin was then created the first synthetic drug.In conclusion of this short differentiation, it is clear that then assume the salicylic acid extracted from the plant would be excessively detrimental for the organism. The synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid instead of assuming that the molecule can reduce the side effects that, in my opinion, are still too many. Will this really the truth? My research did not stop important information and await the next post.
